Sometimes moves happen fast — a chain completes early, a tenancy ends unexpectedly, or a job relocation gives you days rather than weeks. Here's how to handle it without losing your mind.
Day 1: Book movers immediately
This is your first priority, not packing. Availability disappears fast, especially for weekend slots. Use MAZE to compare movers who have availability for your date — you can get quotes and book within minutes rather than spending hours on the phone.
Day 1–2: Ruthless declutter
You don't have time for a careful sort. Use the three-pile method: take, donate/bin, decide later. Be aggressive — anything you're unsure about goes in 'donate/bin'. Less stuff means faster packing, a smaller van, and lower costs. Put bulky items on Facebook Marketplace or Freecycle with 'collection today' — they'll go fast.
Day 2–3: Speed packing strategy
Forget perfect organisation. Pack room by room and label boxes with the destination room only (Kitchen, Bedroom 1, etc.). Use bin bags for soft items like clothes and bedding — they're faster than boxes and compress easily. Wrap fragile items in clothing and towels.
Day 3–5: Admin blitz
Set up Royal Mail redirection online (it starts in 3–5 working days). Change your address with your bank, employer, and GP. Take photos of utility meters at both properties. If you don't have time for everything, prioritise: bank, employer, DVLA, council tax. Everything else can wait a few weeks.
Moving day shortcuts
• Don't empty wardrobes — ask your movers to wrap them with clothes inside using stretch wrap
• Leave drawers full of lightweight items and cling-film them shut
• Use laundry baskets and suitcases as moving containers
• Keep one bag with essentials (chargers, medication, wallet, keys) on your person at all times
• Order takeaway to the new address — you won't want to cook
What not to cut corners on
Even in a rush: don't skip insurance, don't hire unverified movers, and don't forget to do a final walk-through of every room and cupboard before you leave. The loft, built-in wardrobes, and garden shed are the most commonly forgotten spots.
