Moving house involves dozens of tasks across several weeks. Missing even one — like forgetting to redirect your post or book parking — can cause real headaches on moving day. This checklist keeps everything on track.
8 weeks before: Plan and compare
• Start comparing removal companies — use MAZE to get quotes from verified local movers
• Declutter room by room and sell, donate, or bin items you won't take
• Start a moving folder (physical or digital) for quotes, contracts, and receipts
• Notify your landlord if you're renting
• Research schools, GPs, and parking in your new area
6 weeks before: Book and notify
• Book your removal company or man and van
• Arrange buildings and contents insurance for the new property
• Notify your employer if your commute is changing
• Begin collecting packing materials — boxes, tape, bubble wrap, marker pens
• If you have children, arrange school transfers
4 weeks before: Admin and packing
• Set up Royal Mail redirection (takes a few days to activate)
• Notify banks, DVLA, HMRC, GP, dentist of your address change
• Start packing non-essential rooms (spare bedroom, garage, loft)
• Arrange parking permits for both addresses if needed
• Confirm your moving date and time with the removal company
2 weeks before: Utilities and final prep
• Arrange utility transfers or new accounts (gas, electric, water, broadband)
• Take meter readings at both properties
• Confirm access arrangements (keys, parking, lift booking for flats)
• Pack room by room, labelling every box with contents and destination room
• Prepare an essentials box: kettle, mugs, toilet roll, phone charger, snacks, medication
Moving day
• Take final meter readings and photos of both properties
• Do a full walk-through of every room, cupboard, and the loft before leaving
• Keep your essentials box, valuables, and important documents with you (not in the van)
• Be available to direct the crew at both ends
• Check nothing has been damaged before signing off with the movers
First week in your new home
• Test all appliances, heating, and hot water
• Check that utilities are connected and working
• Update your address on online shopping accounts, subscriptions, and memberships
• Introduce yourself to neighbours
• Unpack the kitchen and bedrooms first — everything else can wait
