UK Moving Cost Planning Guide and Press Resources 2026

Downloadable planning benchmarks for removals and man-and-van services across 35 selected UK markets. The ranges come from the MAZE estimate model, with assumptions informed by the owner's removals experience since 2011 and operational pricing knowledge.

Headline planning benchmarks

These figures summarise the selected modelled markets shown below. They are not national statistics, survey results, completed-job averages, or observed MAZE quotes.

Why final moving quotes differ

A planning range is only a starting point. In practice, the work required on moving day and the conditions around the collection and delivery addresses determine the final quote.

Inventory and property type set the workload

Bedroom count is useful, but it does not describe the full inventory. Garages, lofts, sheds, large wardrobes, fragile items and unusually full properties can change the vehicle, crew size and loading time needed. Flats, terraces, detached homes and retirement properties also create different handling requirements.

Parking, stairs and long carries add time

Restricted loading, parking suspensions, upper-floor flats, small lifts and long walks between the property and van can materially extend a job. Customers should tell movers about those conditions before the final quote, including access at both addresses.

Route time matters as well as mileage

A short urban journey can take longer than a greater distance on an open road. Congestion, tolls, ferry or bridge crossings, narrow rural lanes, low-emission zones and restricted delivery windows can all affect vehicle time and scheduling.

Packing and preparation change the service

Full packing, materials, dismantling and reassembly require additional labour and planning. A customer-packed move may cost less, but poorly packed or unfinished items can delay loading. Specialist items should always be described before the mover confirms a price.

Date, seasonal pressure and mover availability affect quotes

Month-end dates, weekends, school holidays, university changeovers and short-notice requests can reduce available capacity. Comparing final quotes means checking what each mover has included, the proposed crew and vehicle, timing, terms, insurance position and any possible extra charges.

Methodology

These planning benchmarks are produced through the MAZE estimate model. The model's assumptions are informed by the owner's removals experience since 2011 and operational pricing knowledge. They are not survey results, completed-job averages, observed MAZE quotes, or statistics collected from a mover network.

The removals table starts with workload assumptions of £300 for a studio, £400 for a 1-bed property, £550 for a 2-bed property, £750 for a 3-bed property, and £1,000 for a 4-bed property. The published scenario adds 10 miles at £1.80 per mile, applies a selected-market planning adjustment, then calculates a low/high range at 85% and 115%. Values are rounded to the nearest £5. The man-and-van hourly figures are separate planning inputs, not outputs from observed bookings.

The 35 locations are selected planning markets, not MAZE's most-quoted areas and not coverage of every UK postcode prefix. Regional figures are simple averages across the selected markets shown in that region; they are not population-weighted or representative regional market statistics.

The published scenario does not calculate the customer's detailed inventory, parking, stairs, lift access, long carries, packing, storage, specialist items, route delays, chosen date, seasonal pressure, or mover availability. Final quotes depend on those details as well as distance and service scope, so they may fall outside these planning ranges.

Journalists and researchers should use the figures together with this methodology and its limitations, and describe them as MAZE estimate-model planning benchmarks rather than observed market prices.
